Cavendish Chess Club finds it roots in the clubs of New Ham and then East Ham in the 1940s. British Champions Dr Stefan Fazekas and Bob Wade were club members, as well as England International Peter Clarke. The club acquired its name following a move to the offices of King & King accountants in Cavendish Square. It had regular success in the London Chess League including winning the first division twice in the early 1970s. In the 1990s the club merged with the Barbican Chess Club and remained one of the strongest teams in the London league. In the 2008/2009 season the club finished second, only losing out to the semi-professional team Wood Green. Current club luminaries include Grandmasters Parker and Watson, and International Masters Ferguson and Cox.
