Cavendish finished 4th in the first City of London Summer Rapidplay League with 6/11, behind Hendon, King's Head II and Athenaeum. It could have been so different - in three matches we went down by the narrowest of margins, 3½ - 4½. Matches were over 4 boards with each player playing 2 games against the same opponent. Players had 30 minutes per game. There were grading restrictions in place for boards 2-4 (U160 for boards 2 and 3, U125 for board 4).
