Welcome to Cavendish Chess Club. We are one of the leading chess clubs in England and the strongest amateur club in London. The club is based near Russell Square and welcomes players of all standards, from beginner to Grandmaster. The club has 4 teams in the London Chess League and also fields a team in the Eastman Cup. The club has close associations with the Barbican teams in the national league, the 4NCL.

Cavendish Chess Club finds it roots in the clubs of New Ham and then East Ham in the 1940s. British Champions Dr Stefan Fazekas and Bob Wade were club members, as well as England International Peter Clarke. The club acquired its name following a move to the offices of King & King accountants in Cavendish Square. It had regular success in the London Chess League including winning the first division twice in the early 1970s. In the 1990s the club merged with the Barbican Chess Club and remained one of the strongest teams in the London league. In the 2016/2017 season the club finished second, only losing out to the semi-professional team Wood Green. That year the club also retained the knock-out Eastman Cup trophy and has now won that competition for 6 of the last 8 seasons. Current club luminaries include Grandmasters Parker and Watson, and International Masters Ferguson and Cox.
